IntroductionThe rapid expansion of oil palm plantations to meet the global demand for edible oils has caused the industry stakeholders to initiate measures to ensure the sustainability of palm oil. The first Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) meeting was held mainly to discuss the production of sustainable palm oil especially in terms of the economic performance and the social & environmental responsibilities of the industry players. Its main objective is “to promote the growth and usage of sustainable palm oil through co-operation within the supply chain and open dialogue between its stakeholders”. The development of a Certification Scheme for Sustainable Palm Oil or the RSPO certification was the outcome of the meeting. RSPO Principles & Criteria which forms the basis of the certification audit was developed and refined from the first until the fifth roundtable meetings in 2007.RSPO Certification takes into account not only good agricultural practices but also responsible social and environmental management. The certification will ensure plantation companies carry out their businesses the sustainable way. |
